Programs to Protect the Local Environment :
Wetland Program and Integrated Management of Water Resources (IMWR) Surrounded by lowlands on 2/3 of its perimeter, Avrankou commune is an area full of abundant living resources where GRABE Benin has intensified its actions. Unfortunately, the resources of these zones have been depleted by unregulated use, apart from certain sacred forests and sites that continue to be protected. These communities are surrounded by plenty of water but for the most part, continue to consume polluted water. GRABE Benin is seeking to teach the local community about the responsible management of water resources, as well as help to safeguard these resources from unnecessary pollution.
Saving monkey habitats along the marshes :
For ages monkeys have had a special place in African tradition. They are completely protected for their role in attracting tourists in certain countries of Africa and the world. However, the monkeys became subject to intensive and illegal capture by hunters and residents of the marshes. Poverty and lack of awareness are two key contributors to this practice.

With further financial support, we are hoping to:
- Implement a monitoring system of the monkey population
- Support alternate economic activities for locals, so they do not turn to monkey hunting (for example, convert hunters to ecotourism guides)
- Set up ecotourism that promotes monkeys as a responsible source of income for the community.
